"In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she's forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city's glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group's leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien's guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret. When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface. At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful." -Goodreads (photo as well)

I have seen so many rave reviews for Sorcery of Thorns. Also, that cover was just calling out to me to buy it. I spent a good few days debating whether or not to buy Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. I read her previous book, An Enchantment of Ravens back in 2017. The only downside of this book (and the reason I was hesistant to buy it) is it is a standalone. This is sad because you will fall in love with the characters.

SPOILER ALERT "A royal wedding is what most girls dream about. It means one celebration after another: balls, fireworks, and revelry until dawn. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement: that she agreed to marry the crown prince in exchange for Arin's freedom. But can Kestrel trust Arin? Can she even trust herself? For Kestrel is becoming very good at deception. She's working as a spy in the court. If caught, she'll be exposed as a traitor to her country. Yet she can't help searching for a way to change her ruthless world . . . and she is close to uncovering a shocking secret. This dazzling follow-up to The Winner's Curse reveals the high price of dangerous lies and untrustworthy alliances. The truth will come out, and when it does, Kestrel and Arin will learn just how much their crimes will cost them. The Winner's Crime by Marie Rutkoski is the second book in the Winner's Trilogy." -Amazon (Photo aswell is from Amazon)

The Winner's Curse was another book I avoided reading for a very long time. However, after reading it, I immediately wanted to buy the second book to add my shelf.

What Are You Reading?

This week I have been reading two books.

1. Sorcery of Thorns <--I am 200 pages into the novel at the moment. Honestly, I am kind of dreading finishing it because a) it is a standalone and b) it is so very good. It reminds me of Harry Potter / Black Butler. It gives off those sort of vibes and I love it. I absolutely adore Nathaniel and Sir Fluffington (anyone who has/or is reading this book will know who I am talking about).

"Scarlett has never left the tiny island where she and her beloved sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. I read over 150 pages of Caraval today. I bought Caraval back when it first came out however, I never ended up reading it. The past day or so I have had the odd urge to dive into Stephanie Garber's world. Today, I picked the book up and read 10x more than I normally do in a day. I am intrigued to find out how this book will end. Also, side note, but this book would make a fantastic movie or t.v. show.

"Winning what you want may cost you everything you love They were never meant to be together. As a general's daughter, seventeen-year-old Kestrel enjoys an extravagant and privileged life. Arin has nothing but the clothes on his back. Then Kestrel makes an impulsive decision that binds Arin to her. Though they try to fight it, they can't help but fall in love. In order to be together, they must betray their people . . . but to be loyal to their country, they must betray each other. Set in a new world, The Winner's Curse is a story of rebellion, duels, ballroom dances, wicked rumors, dirty secrets, and games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart. -Amazon Canada"

The Winner's Curse is one of those books I have crossed paths with many times when I am in a bookstore. The book was published back in 2014, and I feel bad for not picking it up sooner. It is told from two POV: Kestrel and Arin.

Rutkoski's writing style flows nicely through the book. I found the last hundred pages to be a bit rushed. There were also topics that the character's alluded to instead of actually talking about them. This made the book, in my opinion, a bit confusing at time. It might be that I am horrible at picking up at things that should be obvious.

Kestrel and Arin have strong, distinct personalities. I felt Rutkoski did a fantastic job at developing their relationship with one another and slowly incorporating their backstory into the novel.

I also was pleasantly surprised to find out that this book doesn't, really, have a love triangle. That is ok because I totally ship Arin and Kestrel.

The only character that I felt could have been better developed was the antagonist. Again, with me thinking the second half of the book was rushed, I didn't feel like I could connect with this person's character.

The ending of The Winner's Curse will definitely leave readers wanting more and lucky for me the full trilogy is already published.

I am curious to see how this trilogy will develop and which direction it will go in. I am also hoping we see more of Kestrel's friends, Jess and Ronan, in the next book. Ronan was also one of my favourite characters, and I was sad we didn't see him much in the second half of the book.
